As usual, Denzel Washington gives an intense performance in this fascinating story of a drug kingpin’s daring and rapid rise to power.
American Gangsteris based on the honest fib of Frank Lucas , and African American drug bigwig that rose to power in the New York metropolitan area during the Vietnam war . Lucas is wager by Denzel Washington in the uncharacteristic role of spoilt guy rope , but much like like Mafia characters from other picture show , with a counterbalanced code of ethics when it comes to menage . The film was directed by Ridley Scott and also stars Russel Crowe as Richie Roberts , the ( almost only ) dependable cop who has been tax with putting a dent in the drug trade in the area .
The film opens in 1968 , with Lucas as the driver for the former expanse druglord Bumpy Johnson for many year , who also served as a mentor to Lucas . He and his collaborator stumble across one million dollars in overlooked flyer , and despite his partners ' potent insistence that they just keep the money , he resolve to work it in .

Ridley Scott does a cracking job of sucking you into the late 1960s / early seventies and really enchant the finish of the time and of the Lucas family . for stress to give us a complete picture , I did get the film meandering a little bite as well as a piece longer than I would have liked . Those are only minor nit , however .
American Gangsteris a compelling and enchanting look at Lucas ' ascent to power , punctuated by amazing execution by both Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington . While Crowe was fantabulous , lose himself in yet another role , Denzel was magnetize despite the fact that he played essentially the same person he does in many films , except with a coloured twist . The man is just apparently intense and wonderful to look out on screen .
