All Jacked Up and Full of Worms
All Jacked Up and Full of Wormsis the combination of unearthly and transgressive that feel as wrong to be watching alone as it does in the company of others — it ’s a honest midnight flick . The primary emotional responses it elicits are disbelief , discomfort , disarray , and laughter , a combining that can make for a potent aesthetic experience under the right-hand consideration . This pic from writer - director Alex Phillips , making his feature of speech debut , sometimes feels like it ’s going to make it there . It is clearly the product of an artist , and it is realized with vision by a committed cast and gang . But reflecting on the varied experience , it ’s difficult to receive a throughline that makes it worth recommending . Its absurdity is enough to appeal to the correct grouping of adventuresome friends , perhaps , but even those with the stomach for its gross impulsion might find themselves wondering what it was all for .
Fractured and inconstant , the story ofAll jack Up and Full of Wormsresists abstract , and putting some of its ideas into words may fork out them more point-blank than they play , but here goes . Roscoe ( Phillip Andre Botello ) is the maintenance man for a skeevy motel and part of an odd , strained family relationship with Samantha ( Betsey Brown ) , who thirst for transcendent experience . Benny ( Trevor Dawkins ) is a foreign , deprave , lonely man who claims what he wants most is a babe , and whose attempt to order one in the chain mail proves uncomfortable screening . They cross paths after Benny ’s surprisingly warm motel academic session with a local fancy woman , Henrietta ( Eva Fellows ) , lead in them learning they can " take " worm like hallucinogen . After bonding with one another , their trip takes a violent turning when they take to the woods into a depraved couple ( Mike Lopez and Carol Rhyu ) in fond clown makeup who have clearly been hooked on insect longer than they have , and like to up the ante by committing acts of world-wide mayhem .

Or , maybe that all does n’t happen . Phillips does not cater narrative certainty at almost any point , with the destabilizing editing and surreal imagery deter desex interpretation . Is this all Roscoe ’s overdose - induce nightmare ? Is he — as a freakish TV interview the movie repeatedly returns to and suggests is potential — in a netherworld scarper by dirt ball daimon ? Who ’s to say ? No film , specially one this psychedelic , isrequiredto provide narrative answers , but a bite more pellucidity in its storytelling could have servedAll Jacked Up and Full of Wormswell , at least when it comes to the character . The performances do a mint to make them becharm , but because what happens to them is never quite clean , neither is what the audience can con about them from their behaviour . Take Benny , who is played by Dawkins as an amiable simpleton but does and says deep discomforting things . The latent hostility of his scene stem from not knowing exactly what to make of him at any moment , and the reactions he fire vary wildly . It can be exciting not to be distinguish how to sense , but it can also damp the pic ’s ability to talk with any clarity , and the nature of his storyline want for something more classical to say .
And yet , expecting a message from a flick calledAll jack Up and Full of Wormsisn’t quite sightly , and it ’s really more of an aesthetic experience . The repulsion filmclearly displays both unusual vision and dedicated craftwork , and it ’s easiest to apprise it on that level , especially if one ’s look at habits tend to skew more mainstream . The special effects are especially impressive , make what must have been its budget constraints , and they are creatively deployed . Phillips take the most comedic gas mileage out of the louse - as - drugs vanity , leave in a ocular gag that works almost every prison term , and the rest of its laughs are scattered among jolts of disgust and befuddlement . The celluloid is , to its reference , very irregular , and plague a kitchen stove of excited reaction that oscillate constantly .
But here , too , the looker is left wishing for a greater horse sense of curation . Even when a film dares to untether its interview from realness , it ’s the sense of a steady hand shaping their path through the ether that makes such cinematic experiences worthwhile . Formal fanfare make readable that there is a method toAll Jacked Up and Full of Worms’madness , but it gets somewhat lose in transformation , until the prevalent equipment characteristic of its journeying through psychosis is aimlessness . Perhaps this was the creative person ’s intention , and perhaps some of its interview may get more out of the realization of that imagination . But , for this critic , that was n’t quite enough to have made this particular trip worth taking .
