A Mouthful of Air
Written and directed by Amy Koppelman , who adapted her own novel to the sieve , A Mouthful of Airaims to explore postpartum and the effects it has on its protagonist . Amanda Seyfried gives a nuanced performance , butA Mouthful of Airfails to go beyond the control surface to rent with its themes in a meaningful way .
A taste of Airopens in an idyllic way : Julie Davis ( Seyfried ) , a child ’s author and artist whose books attempt to demote down and tackle fright , plays with and takes care of her infant Logos while her hubby , Ethan ( Finn Wittrock ) , prepares for study . However , things take a dark bout when Julie prompt into the bathroom to slice her wrists . She survives the ordeal , but Julie conflict in the backwash of her attempted felo-de-se . She seems set-apart and detached despite her suburban sprightliness showing an idealistic world , all of which is exacerbate by a 2d maternity and Julie ’s continued endeavour to hold herself together , keep up a operation of happiness that underline her postpartum depression further .

Koppelman does n’t shy away from the debilitating result of postpartum depressive disorder , and there ’s a deep horse sense of sympathy and empathy in her picture of Julie . The screenplay does n’t tip into charge her for the feelings she ca n’t quite rock , and Seyfried ’s moving characterization is every bit heartbreaking and gut wrenching . Through her distant eye and a umbrageous smile that never full lights up her typeface , Seyfried open a breathtaking carrying into action that , if nothing else , really carriesA Mouthful of Airthrough to the end , elevating an otherwise slowly - paced film .
While Koppelman is dedicated to showing postpartum in all of its torturous nature , A Mouthful of Airisn’t very interested in turn over deep than it has to . A lot of the details of Julie ’s living are vague , painting a bare bones moving-picture show of her life that is never in full realized or enamor for the consultation . The third - act introduction of Julie ’s begetter is meant to offer up some gag rule , as well as more depth into her past times and their tumultuous , strained human relationship . But the film does n’t offer much to develop this particular relationship and it does n’t inform Julie ’s character anymore than it did before , either . include it when it does n’t actually go anywhere feel like a complete waste product .
Julie ’s character is also miss in development . Her history with depression is scantily match upon and her interiority gets little exploration . The flick want to add the experience of what having postpartum depression can be like , but it struggles to plight with Julie enough to right do so beyond the bare minimum . Her story would have greatly benefited from get more depth . The choice to include scenes that show the future and Julie ’s illustrations ( accompanied by a phonation over from Seyfried reading ) do n’t add much to the story , either , and only convolute the film unnecessarily .
A Mouthful of Airoffers simple glimpse of Julie ’s postpartum Great Depression and , while it does so with empathy and some charge , it fails to build out its story through more thoughtful character development . history elements that are introduced stop up being discarded or gloss over , never adding much nicety to Julie or her past . Rather , it makes her development and the picture show itself all the more muddled and tedious . While a sight of effort is put forth , the film unfortunately never leaves behind its vague and wearisome trappings .
