10,000 BC
While there’s an attempt to make this a personal story, it’s really about what we thought it would be: Incredible vistas populated with a combination of ancient temples, pyramids, woolly mammoths and a cast of (CGI) thousands.
Two weeks ago I posted my thoughts about10,000 B.C.based on what I ’d see so far and at the panel for the plastic film at WonderCon , and one of the words that number to mind regarding what director Roland Emmerich had in mind for this picture was " spectacle . "
Oh , and it tries oh so very hard to survive up to that parole .
The best I can say about10,000 BCis that it was n’t as bad as I was expecting it to be .
The film opens with our sub as a untested boy in a village that count upon the one-year hunt for wooly mammoth for nutrient . It seems that every year there are few and few and that the way of life story of the small village is coming to an end . A young young woman whose village was pillaged is brought to this one as the sole subsister . Her defining characteristic is that she has astonishing blue eye .
And old char who functions as the shaman of these people predicts that their time of hunt down mammoths is confining to an end and the boy who ends up taking the girl as a first mate when they ’re sometime will be the accelerator for move from one epoch to the next . For some reason , the male child ’s Father of the Church decides that he must guide out and provide the village in order of magnitude to insure its natural selection before the last mammoth is hunt . What he hopes to achieve exactly , is not clear .
He leaves his comrade in hunting who seems to be the # 2 head honcho in charge of the village and his son . The boy is teased by others who cerebrate that his father was a coward for leaving . After being estrange from the group , there is a abbreviated soldering present moment between him and the girl where he picks out what I assume to be the North Star and tells her just as that wizard never go neither will he ever intercept roll in the hay her ( or something to that result ) .
Cut to them at about 20 years former : She ’s far and away the infant of the settlement , if not of the intact major planet , and while he ’s all buff and everything , he seems to be kind of a schmoe : A wanna - be big hunter , but not really up to equality . Anyway , he gets reference for bringing down a freehanded woolly mammoth and pay off the big fancy white shaft . He was n’t quite good about it and open it back to his dad ’s pal , although it was difficult for him because come through the spear signify he would also make headway the babe .
Shortly thereafter the predicted forged guys show up and kidnaps most of the town for whatever villainous purposes , and they take her with them . The leader of these cat is quite taken by her ( ok , her name is Evolet , play byCamilla Belle ) .
The young man ( name D’Leh and played bySteven Strait ) resolve to write her . So he , his begetter ’s friend and another young guy left behind set out to track down the bad Guy and rescue everyone .
Now , I ’ve already said this was n’t as bad as I recollect , but on the other bridge player I really did n’t care much about even the two principal type . Emmerich did n’t do much of a job ( although it was obvious he tried ) to make us feel all that connected to these two and they feel kind of like a couple of renovate mannequins to me . To give the movie due credit towards the oddment they did feel a bit more flesh out but overall I was just kind of bore by the whole thing .
One matter I find kind of funny were a couple of very recollective slam sweeping , circling scenes of vistas that looked like they were lead directly from theLord of the Ringsmovie making manual of arms . Beyond that , the CGI mammoths look okay , but that mammoth sabre - toothed tiger seem quite fake to me .
And yes , in one scene they were attack by gargantuan raspberry .
I ’ve heard them referred to as " giant chickens " but to me they look more like giant ostriches . I really would have favor some lizardy matter , but hey , that ’s just me .
This small group ends up touch with another and the word fit out that they ’re going to war with the folks in the expectant Pyramids of Egypt metropolis . In one conniption that open me a chuckle , this grown horrendous warrior who leads the toughest gang of warrior in the region goes up to D’Leh and read to the translator :
" He look youthful . "
To which D’Leh replies :
" I ’m older than I front . "
So while the vehement warrior was mighty , he must also have been easily convinced since that was honorable enough for him .
When they finally get to the giant city , I was distract by the fact that I knew I was watching one long shoot after another of nothing but total CGI . It did n’t appear awful , mind you , but I kind of checked out a bit during those scenes .
Another matter that stand out was that I do n’t believe I ’ve look a movie with so much violence and havoc including people thrown off buildings to flatten 20 story to their deaths , crowing mallets used as deadly artillery , knives , spears and other sharp pointy things as implements of death … all pretty much used without a drop of blood to be seen .
Ah , the joys of a PG-13 movie .
And while I wo n’t give away the ending , just as I was about to give10,000 BCtheslightestamount of deference due to the elbow room the movie seemed to be terminate , it vanished in a powderpuff of smoke in such a manner as to make me express joy out loud in the theater .
Was it awful ? No . Was it entertaining ? gently . You may even care it , but I thought it was pretty weak .
